East Asian Games - an outline

The Games that began in the year 1993 under the auspices of the East Asian Games Association has been vital in promoting a strong sporting culture. The Games are an embodiment of the hopes and dreams of the East Asian people for a forum to showcase their sporting talents. The Games exemplifies the ideals of companionship and friendship among different cultures through sports.
The sportsmen and women from East Asian Countries exhibit their athletic prowess in the East Asian Games, a multi-sport event organized by the East Asian Games Association (EAGA). East Asian Games are held once in four years. East Asian Games has participation from countries like China, Guam, Japan, Hong Kong, North and South Korea, Macau, Mongolia and Chinese Taipei. Kazakhstan was a member of East Asian Games Association and took part in the games regularly. But after their inception into the European Olympic Committee, they do not partake in the event. East Asian Games has representation from most part of East Asia. National Olympic Committee decides the participants in the Games.

During the year 1991, the assembly of the East Asian National Olympic Committees officially decided on a proposal for the East Asian Games. In November 1991, the Coordination committee meeting that held decided on the conduct of the East Asian Games. The Quadrennial event was inaugurated in China in the year 1993. The Coordination meeting held for the third time in Beijing established the Coordination Committee for the East Asian National Olympic Committees. The decision to host the first East Asian Games in Shanghai, China from 9th to 18th May, 1993 was taken in this Coordination committee meeting. In the sixth Coordination Committee meeting that was held in Shanghai, the title East Asian National Olympic Committee was renamed to East Asian Games Association.

The second East Asian Games was held in Busan, South Korea in 1997 (10th- 19th May). The third East Asian Games was held in Osaka, Japan, in 2001(19th-27th May) and the fourth was held in Macau, China, in the year 2005 (29 October to 6ht November). The fifth East Asian Games will be held in Hong Kong in 2009.East Asian Games aspire to bring together the sportsmen and women from all regions that are East Asian. It promotes sports among East Asian people and also aims at developing intercultural knowledge and comradeship among the East Asian people. The Games nurture the exchange of cultures and sports among the East Asian people. East Asian people found an embodiment of their desire to excel in sports in the East Asian Games.

The sports included in the East Asian Games are Aquatics, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Bowling , Dance sport, Dragonboat racing , Football, Field Hockey, Gymnastics, Judo, Hnadball, Rowing, Shooting, Soft Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Karate, Wushu, Weightlifting, etc. Every country in the East Asian Region has a National Olympic Committee representing them. These National Olympic Committees enter their respective countries in the sporting event, East Asian Games.

About 2800 athletes participate in the East Asian Games in around 17 sports. There are as many as 235 disciplines. East Asian Games that began with 12 sports increased to 13 in the next East Asian Games and in the next Games it was 15 and now the number of sports has become 17.

Hong Kong is the next official host of the East Asian Games. Hong Kong outpolled Chinese Taipei in the run to be the host for the 2009 edition of the East Asian Games.

Hong Kong has been an integral part of the Asian Games and the East Asian Games for about 50 years. The venues of the East Asian Games like Hong Kong have been instrumental in propagating a strong sporting culture that is untainted by discrimination and geographical barriers.
