We have days for celebrating everything that we love and cherish. We celebrate mother's day to say thanks for the selfless work our mothers put in to bring us up and show our appreciation for the emotional security they give us; we celebrate father's day to thank him for the financial security and physical security he provides. We celebrate Valentine's Day to celebrate love and we celebrate Labor Day to celebrate the contribution and efforts the humble worker puts in building up a nation and a country. We celebrate each event that touches out hearts with a special day which makes us stop and think about their significance in our lives; it makes us also able to say "Thank You" for making our lives better. It is a tribute. It is an ode of appreciation and gratitude to God as well.
We exist because the planet Earth exists. This simple statement indicates the total and overwhelming importance of planet earth on our lives. We would not exist if this planet did not exist. Our existence is directly linked to the existence of the planet. So, is it a surprise that we celebrate a day which is dedicated to Earth? Of course not.
Earth Day 2006 is scheduled to be held on April 22 - which also commemorates the 36th anniversary of the Earth Day. That means we celebrated Earth Day only for 36 times. Better late than never - so I will not crib on that. Earth Day 2006 will touch again some genuine issues on environment which actually is growing in importance with the second, not the day. The environment issues was actually the reason why this day started being celebrated all over the world, and as it is normal Earth Day 2006, too will focus on environment.

It is of course of paramount importance to man to understand that earth has limited resources and we are squandering away those precious resources without a thought for tomorrow. Earth Day 2006 will try to address and highlight some of the burning issues on the aspects of environment such as the fast disappearance of entire species of animals and trees, mass deforestation, reducing water resources and so on. This day, the Earth Day 2006, will again bring into focus the importance of the preservation of the environment. Besides the fact that each species of animal and plant has a chain, which dies off if one link, is broken by the extinction of one species, human cannot exist in isolation. Imagine man without any animal around him. Can you even imagine such a scene? Earth Day 2006 is the day when you should to imagine this - and do your best to prevent such picture come to life.
