The Usual Suspects is a 1995 movie that is so well written that not only was it voted one of the best plot twists in movie history but the writer of the movie, Christopher McQuarrie, won an Academy Award for his writing efforts on The Usual Suspects. Kevin Spacey also won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in his role as the seemingly crippled Verbal Kint. The entire movie is expertly crafted not only by the award winning writer and actors but also in its presentation by director Bryan Singer. Throughout the entire movie you think you know what is going on and right up until the last 10 minutes of the movie you are convinced you have figured the whole movie out. That is the wonderful twist of The Usual Suspects is that it is so well written, well directed, and well acted that you honestly think you have everything under control throughout at least 90% to 95% of the movie. The twist at the end is one of the greatest feats of screen writing ever and not only did it gather critical acclaim at the Academy Awards but it became a box office hit and a rental hit after it was done at the box office. If you have never seen The Usual Suspects then you deserve to treat yourself to this masterpiece of a movie if for no other reason than to see what everyone is talking about.

The Usual Suspects is one policeman’s quest to find the legendary criminal Keyser Soze and much of the movie is spent in the detective’s office recounting the events of the previous months with what appears to be a harmless cripple named Verbal Kint. All through the movie the identity of Soze not only seems to become more of a mystery but it changes from each member of the cast in a very ingenious way. The Usual Suspects is about a crew of criminals that get an assignment from the ultimate criminal, Keyser Soze, to destroy a ship that is bringing in a shipment of cocaine. Throughout the movie the gang commit various crimes both for money and to sharpen their skills. They are backed into a corner by Keyser Soze’s personal attorney to commit this crime for Soze. It is at this point that The Usual Suspects takes more twists and turns than an amusement park roller coaster. It is not an annoying journey as some movie twists can be but rather a challenge to the audience to figure out what is really going on. The detective thinks he has everything figure out but in the end he realizes that he knew absolutely nothing.

Kevin Spacey is brilliant in The Usual Suspects and the whole movie is a pleasure to watch. Who is Keyser Soze? This movie became so popular that the name Keyser Soze has become synonymous with mystery and deceit of the highest degree. To say who Keyser Soze really is would be the equivalent of being that loud mouthed movie patron who ruins the movie for you while you are waiting in line to see the movie. Let’s just say that The Usual Suspects is a ride you won’t soon forget and a movie that you will probably have to watch a few times over just to make sure you get everything that is going on because even when you think you know what is going on in The Usual Suspects you really have no idea what is going on.
