"Labour Day differs in every essential way from the other holidays of the year in any country," said Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. He went on to state that all other holidays of this sort are more or less connected with a mans struggle with another man. But Labour Day is devoted to no man, living or dead.
American Labour Day is celebrated the first Monday of September every single year. Labour Day celebrates the creation of the labor movement and is fully dedicated to the social and economic achievement of the workers of that country. Labour Day constitutes a yearly national tribute to the great men and women who work so hard during the year to keep the country up and running. These men and women help to protect the strength, economic status, and overall well-being of the country.
The first American Labour Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City. This first American Labour Day was also celebrated in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union was the wheels beneath the first Labour Day. They made the entire thing possible, and have been remembered for their efforts for over 100 years. In 1884 the Central Labor Union decided to celebrate Labour Day on the first Monday of every September. The idea of Labour Day originally started out only in New York City, but the people of New York urged the rest of the world to follow suit and jump on board. By 1985 many other cities and industrial areas of the world caught on. Everyone was beginning to realize what an important holiday this had begun and wanted to pay their respects as well.
The character of Labour Day itself has made some drastic changes over the past 100 and some odd years. It was originally just a holiday to celebrate the men and women who kept their respective country up and running. There was no sort of special parades or celebration, just good old respect paid towards the men and women that we all love and adore for their hard work. Well that has all changed in recent years. More recently mass displays of respect for workers have been shown in public, as well as parades to commemorate their work throughout the year. Labour Day has also become a big deal in the media. Coverage is given to Labour Day every year in medias such as radio, television, and newspapers.
Do not forget to celebrate Labour Day in the upcoming year. Even though Labour Day has become more commercialized over the past couple of years do not forget where it came from. Labour Day is all about paying your respect to the hard workers of your country who are out on the job everyday to ensure a safe and economically advantageous country. So remember the first Monday in September every year. It may not be one of everybody's favorite holidays, but it is surely one that should never be forgotten and the Europeans make sure that they do not forget it. It does only happen once a year and the celebrations to seem to be dying down a little but just so long as the media hype it up then you can be sure that it will be celebrated the traditional way.
