Does the general daily horoscopes do astrology an injustice?

Added: 10/16/2006

The number of people all around the world who check their daily horoscopes runs in millions even though the daily horoscope is more heavily criticised than praised. So what is this fascination with a general daily horoscope that catches so much global attention if no one believes a word they read? In addition does the general daily horoscope do more harm to the credibility of astrology than good?

The general daily horoscope is a small feature included in a wide variety of media and its inclusion is indicative of something very special. No matter how many critics deride the content found in the general daily horoscopes no one can deny that the world has a fascination with it. Literally millions of people all around the world regularly check what astrologers predict about the day ahead of them that it seems odd that some actually dare to suggest that it is just nonsense.

To better appreciate the general daily horoscopes it is important to understand what astrologers the world over are attempting to accomplish through the provision of a very brief summary relating to everyone’s imminent future. Actually what astrologers are attempting to do is the impossible, because as we are all acutely aware not everyone can expect to experience identical occurrences within such a short space of time. Yet general daily horoscopes suggest that this is indeed possible, or does it?

Horoscopes should be a very personal issue, after all they are about an individual’s life experiences and what is relevant to each of us. Sharing the expectations of future predictions somehow seems inconsistent with a concept that suggests it has the ability to accurately predict the future for each and every person at a separate level. Not only that, but astrology also suggests that it can identify specific traits and characteristics within every individual and thereby categorize them to the extent that it can accurately identify compatible partners both in business and romance. Ludicrous or not there are a sufficient numbers of people who follow the general daily horoscopes for it to possess more than passing credibility. For example knowing your star sign and the star signs compatible with your own has become for many, as important as the first look that catches that special someone’s eye.

The question whether the general daily horoscope denigrates astrological concepts that have stood the test of time by several thousand years possesses two points of view. First, it would be incorrect to suggest that everyone will encounter the same events, people or activities identified in a general daily horoscope relevant to each star sign. Second, the interpretation of the celestial language reduced to a few words covering each day does not support a strong argument for the astrological concepts that have taken thousands of years to develop. Third, astrologers who write daily horoscopes should also spend time arranging a form of words that explains how inaccurate the general daily horoscope is for every individual. Having said that, they could then add that the general daily horoscope can be used as a check in regard to the most significant celestial movements occurring every day and that it is those movements that are most likely to impact of the categorized star signs in the way suggested.

Of course astrology in details is much more complex when focusing on a single individual with many other factors apart from the significance of a star sign. However whether the general daily horoscope damages the credibility of astrological concepts is doubtful, simply because its presence makes us think about astrology, even if only very briefly. For astrology, that’s good.
