Discovering Your Astrological Sign

Added: 09/14/2006

For most of us, picking up the Sunday Horoscope is the closest we come to learning about Astrology. But those who take the time to learn more about this ancient art find out that there is a lot more to it than just looking at your astrological sign each week. It is a complex system, which, when understood, can help us understand the patterns and experiences we have in our lives.

We wonder why astrology doesn’t get any respect anymore. For hundreds of years it was a respected science practiced by political and religious leaders alike. But with few notable exceptions (such as Ronald Reagan), astrology has completely fallen out of fashion. Most people today see it as simply a bunch of superstitious hooey, to be read once a week along with the Sunday funnies to give us all a chuckle.

Ironically, it is the very thing which brings astrology into most people’s lives which also leaves everyone so skeptical. These popular horoscopes are based on only one astrological sign from your entire chart – the Sun sign. And while you may be able to hit on some basic generalities by knowing a person’s Sun sign, the truth is that it really tells very little about you. After all, every person born in the same month (give or take) shares the same Sun sign! So how can we hope for any accuracy in a system like this, that takes only one astrological sign into account and yet supposedly is able to give each person insight into their individual lives? Obviously something is very wrong with this picture.

The problem is that astrology is based on twelve zodiacal signs and anywhere from seven to ten planets (depending on whether you are using traditional or modern astrology). It is the interaction of all these energies which influence our lives, and we must look at all of them in order to gain any real insight from our astrological charts.

For example, a person may have a Cancer sun sign, and if they look at the horoscope in their local newspaper they may read something which tells them how they will be facing emotional hardships in the coming days and how they must learn to open up and share those emotions to better deal with their relationships. And yet, the Cancer reading this horoscope is not an overly emotional person at all, and in fact tends to be a much more intellectual type who deals in rationality, not feelings, and at the same time have an easy time with relationships. So this proves that astrology is bunk, right? Wrong. The commercial horoscope only looked at one astrological sign – in this case Cancer, the Sun sign of the individual. If we were to look at the full chart of the person in question, we might very well find that their rising sign is Gemini, an astrological sign of intellect and reason. And their Mercury may fall in this house as well; Mercury being the planet of thought and intellect. We may also find that this person has Venus, the planet of love, in the astrological sign of Leo, helping the person to have a vital and exciting love life. So even though they may be a Cancer sun sign, the relation of other signs and planets in their chart may cause this person to experience things very differently than what the simple horoscope would imply.

This can all seem very complicated, especially if you start looking at other forms of astrology aside from the traditional western version, such as trying to figure out your Vedic Zodiac sign, Chinese Zodiac sign, or Sidereal Zodiac sign. But really, no matter what differences there may be in technique, the basics are always the same. Look to see what planets fall in what astrological sign, and see how each planet and sign relates to the others to obtain a better understanding of the types of talents and struggles a person will have in their lives. Learning to use this information can help us all lead a happier more fulfilling life – just ask Ronald Reagan.
