Desi is a term many South Asians use to refer to themselves. Desi comes from a Sanscrit word that means "of the mother land". When we speak of South Asia, we're speaking primarily about Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. But the term Desi links the South Asian culture regardless of where the individual lives. Desi film is often associated with Bollywood or Indian cinema. And Desi chat rooms often are dedicated to rising and establishe Desi film stars. This is becoming more and more apparent as Indian cinema gets imported more and more frequently to the United States.
