When most people think of pregnancy and food, they think of weight gain.  However, while many women simply become ravenous and eat like mad throughout their nine months of carrying a baby, your pregnancy appetite may be a bit more complicated.  Some women experience a decrease in the pregnancy appetite, and a few even lose weight during the period when they are expected to be gaining weight to support the growth of their baby in the womb.  However, there are steps you can take to regain your pregnancy appetite.

First, if you experience a loss of appetite during pregnancy, go to see your doctor and see if there a physiological problem with your calorie absorption.  This is uncommon, but occurs on occasion, and if this is an issue with your pregnancy it is important to know about it as soon as possible so that you can find a solution before it influence the health of your baby.

To stay in top condition for pregnancy, your body needs to take on more calories than usual, but that doesn't necessarily mean that you will feel the urge to consume them.  If you are having trouble gaining weight, try bulking up with a protein shake similar to the ones that athletes consume while training for an event.  You can also try planning out your meals in advance and sticking to your eating schedule regardless of fluctuations in your pregnancy appetite.  Enlist the support of a partner-this can be your spouse or romantic partner, but a friend or family will do just as well.  Sometimes another pregnant woman, or a woman who has been through one or more pregnancies in the past, can be your greatest ally as you confront the unpredictable ups and down of your pregnancy appetite.

Pregnancy is a complicated bodily process, and your system is flooded with hormones and chemicals which it does not usually experience.  This can lead to a lot of intense side effects ranging from a sudden craving for pickles to the unexpected onslaught of depression.  Sometimes, this depression leads to a loss of appetite.  Pregnancy appetite can seem capricious at best, but at worst you may be encountering a lack of desire for food.  This is sometimes a sign of psychological depression.

When we think of pregnancy, depression isn't necessarily the first thing that comes to mind, but depression during pregnancy is actually not uncommon at all.  Pregnancy is a huge physiological shift for your body, and marks a big change in your lifestyle.  These fast-moving changes can lead to emotional turmoil in anyone, so if you are experience an unexpected decrease in your pregnancy appetite you may want to consider if it is indicative of a larger problem.

Get a referral from your doctor, who may know a specialist in pregnancy-related depression.  It can feel shameful to admit that you are not happy during your pregnancy, especially when everybody around you expects you to be thrilled by the baby and all the changes it will bring, but there is no shame in having a more complex reaction to this sea change in your body and your circumstance.

When you talk to your doctor, be honest about any other difficulties you may be having in addition to your pregnancy appetite fluctuation.
