Celebrating 48 Years Of South East Asian Games

The South East Asian Games also known as SEA Games is a sports event kind of like an Olympic for South East Asian countries. The South East Asian game’s origin is from the Southeast Asian Peninsular Games or SEAP Games. The countries have contests of different sports in which athletes participate from the 11 member countries. This event is always filled with enthusiastic audience and sporty athletes.
The South East Asian Games also called as SEA Games first came in to being on May 22, 1958 when a delegation was sent from the countries in Southeast Asian Peninsula attending the third Asian game in Tokyo, Japan. Then it was decided to establish a sport organization that will manage this sports event for South East Asian countries. The member countries who founded the South East Asian Peninsula Games Federation were Burma, Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. The first sports event was held in 1959 and is continuing till now. On February 5, 1977 Philippines, Brunei and Indonesia also became a member of this event. Therefore the name was changed to South East Asian Games Federation. Every member country sends their best athletes in the competition to show their talents.


The eleven member countries of this multi-sport event are Brunei, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Burma, Singapore, Timor-Leste, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. The South East Asian Games is a biannual multi-sport event which has its own flag. The flag displays six golden rings interlocking each other forming a circle on a blue field. This flag was used from the first game of South East Asian Games in 1959 till 1997. The current flag which is now being used since 1999 has ten rings on the flag instead of six. This flag is lowered in the ceremony, folded and then presented showing the next host of the SEA Games.


The names of the sports included in South Easy Asian Games are 43. the names of the sports included in this event are Archery, Arnis, Athletics, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Billiards, Body Building, Bowling, Boxing, Chess, Cycling, Dance Sport, Diving, Dragon Boat, Equestrian, Fencing, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Judo, karate, Kayak, Lawn Bowls Muay Thai, Pencak Silat, Petanque, Rowing, Sailing, Sepak Takraw, Shooting, Softball, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Triathlon, Volleyball, Water Polo, Weightlifting, Wrestling and Wushu. During the 48 years of this sports event Thailand has hosted six times, Malaysia has hosted five times, Singapore, Indonesia and Philippines has hosted four times, Burma (now known as Myanmar) has hosted this exciting event two times and finally Brunei, Vietnam and Laos has hosted just one time.


The 24th South East Asian Games will be held in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand from December 6 to December 16, 2007. It will be the sixth time Thailand is hosting this event. The further list of hosting countries in the upcoming years is given below:

The South East Asian Games (SEAG) is a great way to get to know your neighboring countries.
