Cancer is an abnormal growth somewhere in the body and can cause death. Cancer occurs when cells replicate in such a way that it affects normal bodily functions. It can occur spontaneously in the body or can be a result of exposure to something cancerous, such as asbestos, radiation, chemicals, or tobacco. Almost any chemical, unnatural substance created by man can affect the body either directly or indirectly. Naturally existing radiation can do genetic damage which can in turn affect the way cells replicate themselves in the body, and exposuremay not be known or prevented. Despite the specific cause, which might never be known, cancer is in most cases treatable and can be taken care of with medical procedures or medications. In the past, this was not a luxury that cancer victims had and many died a horrible death. Cancerous growths can be slow growing or fast growing, and pain is almost always associated with cancer.
Cancer awareness issues are making people more aware of cancer than in the past. Types of cancer that were not known are now mentioned, as are treatments available. Cancer awareness issues can be made public by the affliction of a famous person or the association developed to make people aware. In recent years, the cancer awareness issues regarding breast, lung, prostate, and colon cancer have become known to the public. There is a movement to find cures for these types of cancer as well as improved treatments in the interim that cause less suffering. Increased public awareness and fundraising are helping to speed this process along.
The development of medications that are more specialized are better than past medications and target the area of cancerous growth in a more specific area than those of old. As a result, this method of drug use to treat cancer, also known as chemotherapy, has improved and can allow a patient to live a more normal life than before. Chemotherapy practices have improved but sometimes the old methods are still necessary as aggressive types cannot be treated in any other way. This means making a patient very sick and nearly eliminating the functioning of the immune system before the cancer has been removed from the body and recovery can begin. Hair can fall out and weight loss is common. Patients who are subjected to this type of treatment need to be especially careful about contracting infections, as an infection can kill them. Other means of cancer treatment involve surgical removal of a tumor or area of growth. Chemotherapy and surgery can be joined for a more effective treatment. Radiation is another option, aimed at a specific area of the body and can shrink cancer. Radiation therapy can cause a burn similar to a bad sunburn as it can destroy skin tissue in its goal of eradicating the cancer. It can also cause cancer growth in other areas of the body and is not used unless absolutely necessary in most cases.
Cancer is diagnosed by either x-ray or biopsy, but can be determined by other means. Breast cancer is subject to a mammogram, which is like an x-ray. Bone cancer is determined by a needle biopsy, while skin cancer can be determined by removing a small piece of the suspected area. More advanced methods that exist now mean a better odds for recovery and earlier detection. The time for cancer treatment is better now, but with increased research, hopefully in the future treatment will be as easy as treating a cold.
