Cage Bird Travel

Traveling with a cage bird is nothing more difficult than traveling with a dog or cat. Birds can travel in similar accommodations from under the seat in a cabin on a flight, the back seat of your car or in the cargo compartment of a ship. The size of your bird may determine where the bird can be held on a plane or ship. If you are traveling with your bird in your car, all you need is a cage that is comfortable for your pet.

Bird owners that can't find a place to board their pet or a bird sitter can travel with their cage bird by car, plane or ship. Many exotic bird owners travel with their pets because they are so valuable. Leaving the care of an expensive bird to someone who is unfamiliar with their upkeep can be a risky proposition. The best way to make sure your bird is safe is to take them with you while traveling so you can care for them yourself.

If you've never traveled with your bird you will need a special birdcage for their safety.  As with any travel on an airline or ship you will need to inquire ahead of time with the cargo department what their specifications for cages are. Most cage bird carriers are inexpensive ranging in price from fewer than twenty dollars. More expensive cages are available for large and expensive birds and many can be custom made for the individual bird.

The average traveler will want a small well-ventilated birdcage for their travel needs. A simple cage bird carrier will have plenty of air holes because a bird has a much higher heart rate than other pets and therefore requires more oxygen.  It should have a perch, a top opening and easy to disinfect surfaces. Deluxe models may include an additional side door and a removable bottom tray for easy cleaning. Carrier covers are a must for long distance travel as the will keep birds calm and prevent drafts that can cause illness.

Birds travel with ease in the new vest style carriers. These easy to wipe clean hands free carriers allow you to take your small birds with you to the vet or on a short trip in your car. These carriers feature mesh fabric for maximum airflow, zippered openings at the top and bottom, removable bottom tray, beveled perches and toy loops. Vest style cage bird carriers are priced around thirty-five dollars and the matching carrier cover is under fifteen dollars.

Traveling with your cage bird can be mess free if you purchase a flight suit for your bird prior to traveling. Birds can be taken out of their cage when wearing a cute flight suit fitted with a bird diaper. The flight suit allows your bird to roam free without leaving droppings around your home or hotel room. Flight suits are made of soft and stretchable fleece and nylon for your bird's comfort. The suits secure with a self-fastening hook and loop closure.

For quick trips that don't require a lot of planning consider purchasing a disposable fold down cardboard bird carrier. A cage animal carrier such as these is inexpensive and can be found for under a dollar a piece. After you use a cardboard carrier simply fold them back down and dispose of them.  A cardboard carrier is perfect for those unplanned trips to the vet.

Traveling with your bird has never been easier. A few simple items are all that you need to keep your pet safe and comfortable. Plan ahead when traveling and be sure to include a few extra necessities for your pet bird such as water, food, a leash or tether, powdered anti-stress serum for anxiety prone birds and their favorite toys. Traveling with your bird can be a fun and rewarding experience when your pet is prepared for the journey.
