In level I of breast cancer, hormonal therapy can be used to block the effect of estrogen. This helps to reduce the amount of growth a tumor would normally experience. With cancer cells, the estrogen in the body actually causes a cell to grow. In the breast cancer treatment stages, this is usually the most familiar to those with family histories of breast cancer.
In level II, breast cancer patients may opt for a treatment that introduces a chemical compound into the body. This compound disrupts the cell communication and cell growth in order to prevent cancer cells from growing. The breast cancer treatment stages are such that introducing this in level I may inhibit the body’s natural defense system.
In levels III and higher, treatment options may include chemotherapy, which is a drug that kills cancer cells or radiation therapy. In radiation therapy, the breast cancer treatment stages are advanced, either locally or have spread to other areas such as the lining of the chest. Treatment with high energy radiation rays which are aimed at the area around the tumor is usually the most invasive type of treatment for breast cancer patients. If a diagnosis of early breast cancer is made; patients may opt to have surgery in order to remove as much of the cancer as possible. If there is a chance to remove only the tumor and not the entire breast, a lumpectomy, or breast conserving surgery is performed. This allows the normal tissue to remain and reduces the amount of reconstruction necessary to the breast.
If the entire breast tissue is affected, a mastectomy is performed to remove the breast tissue entirely. The chances of the breast cancer treatment stages being rendered ineffective are still present; however the risks are much lower.

Adjuvant therapy helps to prevent recurrence of the cancer cells in addition to surgery. As such, the survival rate today for women who suffer from breast cancer is higher than it has ever been!
