Even if you are not a lover of board games, Balderdash is a game that will get your attention and keep you interested for as long as any other game ever before. This is a game that requires a sense of humor and the ability to bluff other players if you want to do well. Balderdash is simply hilarious and works great as an icebreaker, a party game, or just something to do when a group of friends gets together and doesn't have anything better to do. Even better, you don't really have to know the Balderdash rules all that well to play because it isn't a complicated game at all.
Unlike a lot of games these days, Balderdash isn't flashy or high tech. While there is a new version of the game out, Beyond Balderdash, it's not really all that different from the original version, as it just supplies even more laughs and timeless fun for you and your friends. Balderdash is just one of those games that don't get boring, it doesn't get to the point where you can't play it anymore. It's educational and entertaining, and what board game can top that?
The rules of Balderdash are actually pretty simple. Each player rolls the dice and the person with the largest number will be the dasher. The dasher draws a card and reads the word off of it and then spells it for the rest of the players. Each player then jots down what they believe is the definition of the word. The point here is to have a definition of a very uncommon word that actually sounds like it could be the real definition. Then, the slips of paper are given to the dasher who knows what the real definition is and he or she reads the definitions out loud without showing much emotion because he wants to bluff them into believing one definition or the other is correct. Then, when all the definitions have been read, each player says which definition they believe to be the truth. Each player who votes for a real definition gets to move ahead two spaces. If your fake definition got voted on as the real definition you get to move ahead the number of votes it got, and if no one gets the real definition at all then the dasher gets to move ahead three spaces. The first person to get to the end of the board wins.
So, basically you need to try to write definitions that are believable enough that people will buy into them, or definitions so funny that the dasher cannot hold his composure, when he reads them so that he cannot get ahead in the game since the dasher stands a chance to move three spaces every time he or she is up as a dasher. Each player takes turns being the dasher.
The definitions that people give for these very uncommon words are just hilarious and someone will end up cracking up every round. If you are a great wordsmith or if you like poker this is definitely the board game for you as it incorporates some things from both poker and wordsmith! This is a fun game for just about everyone, especially if you have a sense of humor!
Balderdash is fun to play because there aren't harsh Balderdash rules that take away from the game. It's straight forward and fun, and you can actually learn something if you pay attention to the real definitions of words! This can be a great family game when children are old enough to participate and understand the concept of bluffing.
Balderdash can be purchased for about twenty five dollars and it's worth every penny. If you haven't played it yet, you should definitely consider it sometime soon! It's a timeless game that you'll want to play again and again!
