The excitement doesn't have to start and end with your child. You can join in the fun, too! Your child would probably want you to. You can reminisce about the fun times you had with your child and his/her birthday party. Having fun with games you remember as a kid, such as 'pass the parcel', 'pin the tail on the donkey' games and even some fun with oranges and lemons! Don't forget to try some new games, too! There are plenty of activities for children and adults alike to enjoy. Be a kid for a day with your child, and you will all have a great time!
Hints and Tips:
Be flexible with the games. Remember that some may not take with the children, so you should just move on to the next activity. Have your child help with planning the party's activities. If they think it will be fun, their friends are likely to as well. Have all of the activities ready to go before the party begins. If you have a young child (ages 2-5), everyone is a winner. Some small children may not understand the concept of game playing, and it will only upset them if only one child is the winner and receives a prize. That will end up with a lot of temper tantrums, crying and a generally upset bunch of kids. Have prizes set up and ready for each child for every activity. You can shop around at your local dollar store for these. You can even make them gender-specific, and have your child come with you to help you pick them out. He/she may know better than you will about what their friends like.
Here are some activities (including the oranges and lemons) to get you started:
Pin the tail on the donkey game
This you can buy at a party store, or make one yourself. Maybe your child would like to make it with you. You would need a large piece of poster board, the kind that has poster paper on both sides and a foam type of material in the middle. You will also need a blindfold, such as a bandanna. You can print up a picture of a donkey or make one yourself. You can also redefine the game by using a different animal with a tail. Maybe you could use your child's favorite animal. You will also need some tacks, and the separate tails with each child's name on it. With smaller children you can use tape.
How to play: Have the birthday kid go first. He/she stands in front of the donkey with the tail in hand. Have a friend blindfold them and spin them three times. The child must then try to find the donkey and place the tail where he/she thinks it goes. This is done with each child.
Pass the Parcel
You'll need different colors of tissue paper to wrap the parcel-a package that will include a variety of surprises. The largest (for the birthday kid) should be placed in the middle. Add another prize for each child and wrap each one around the first prize. You will also need some music to go along with it, such as a children's cassette or CD.
How to play: Have all of the children sit in a close circle. When the music starts, the children pass the parcel to the person next to them. When you stop the music, the kid holding the parcel gets to rip off the first layer of tissue paper and gets a prize. Afterwards, they can sit out to make sure each child gets a prize. To make sure your birthday kid gets the last, biggest prize, don't stop the music when he/she is holding it. They will get it at the very end!
Oranges and Lemons 1
This game can be played with either oranges or lemons. Set up two different teams of children in parallel lines. They need to pass the orange or lemon using only their chins and necks to the next in line. If someone drops the orange or lemon, they must start over at the beginning of their line. The object is to get to the end of the line first!
Oranges and Lemons 2
Another version of this game is a racing game. You will need two oranges or lemons and a pair of pantyhose for each child. Place an orange or lemon in the pantyhose and tie it to the waist of each child so that it hangs down and can just reach the ground, but not drag. Have all the children line up, just as in a running race. Place the second orange or lemon on the ground in front of them. The kids must only use the orange or lemon in the pantyhose to push the other one to the finish line! Two fun games with oranges and lemons!
