It was at that time when an urge on the part of the Asian nations was felt regarding the need to start a new type of competition. Why? The chief reason behind this was that there was an intention to display the dominance of Asia, not through violence but through the strengthening of mutual understanding. With this end in view India took a leading part in this drive when in August 1948, during the 14 th Olympic Games in London, the Indian IOC representative Guru Dutt Sondhi presented a dynamic proposal to the sports leaders of the Asian Games rearding the idea of having discussions about holding the Asian Games. The proposal infulenced all to form the Asian Athletic Federation, later known as the Asian Games Federation which became instrumental in the establishment of the first Asian Games in 1951, in New Delhi, India. it was also decided at the same time that the Asian Games would be regularly held once every four years.
