Asian Games In A New Aim

Each and every continent is proud to organize different sports events, exclusively participated by the nations of that respective continent. While in Europe in the discipline of soccer we have the European Cup, in Latin America we have the Copa America. Likewise, asian games in the realm of the continent of Asia is also venerated in the same esteem. It is also called Asiad and is a multi sport event held every four years among the sports persons from the length and breadth of Asia.
The position of the asian games in the continent of Asia though held in high esteem, in real terms happens to be under the supervision of the International Olympic Committee or the IOC. For each and every event there is the provision of awarding medals, with gold for first place, silver for second and bronze for third, a glorious tradition right from its initiation in 1951. How are the competitors selected to make the asian games in the whole world a gloious event? In this repsect, the competitors are entered by a National Olympic Committee or the NOC, for representing their country of citizenship. Throughout the event different national anthems in conjunction with the respective national flags do accompany the medal ceremonie, andalso the tables showing the number of medals won by each country are widely used. However, it is to be noted though the position of asian games in the international sports atmosphere remains atop of the list, there is an unparalleled privilege that enables the representation of a few non-sovereign countries along with the recognised nations. In this regard the special cae of Taiwan should be taken into consideration. It should always be remembered how this issude was handled, by having it complete as Chinese Taipei, due to thepolitical status of Taiwan. For the 15 th times the International Olympic Committee organised asian games in Doha, Qatar, from december 1 to december 15, 2006. The 16th Asian Games will be held in Guangzhou, China from November 12, 2010 to November 27, 2010. It is true that with years the significance of the Asian Games is increasing far and wide. But did it start all of a sudden? Certainly not! The Asian Games, in the broader aspect owes its origin to the local and short statured Asian multi sport competitions of the yesretyears. During this time there used to a sports competition among the Empire of Japan, the Philippine Islands and the Republic of China, known as the Far Eastern Championship Games created for the display of unity and cooperation among three nations. While the first games were held in Manils in 1913. Though other Asian nations participated after its initiation, it was discontinued in 1938 at the time of the invasion of China leading to the expansion of the Empire.

Moreover, after the World War II, a significant change took place in the international poiltical climate with the attaining of independence by severalk nations of Asia. It was at that time when an urge on the part of the Asian nations was felt regarding the need to start a new type of competition. Why? The chief reason behind this was that there was an intention to display the dominance of Asia, not through violence but through the strengthening of mutual understanding. With this end in view India took a leading part in this drive when in August 1948, during the 14 th Olympic Games in London, the Indian IOC representative Guru Dutt Sondhi presented a dynamic proposal to the sports leaders of the Asian Games rearding the idea of having discussions about holding the Asian Games. The proposal infulenced all to form the Asian Athletic Federation, later known as the Asian Games Federation which became instrumental in the establishment of the first Asian Games in 1951, in New Delhi, India. it was also decided at the same time that the Asian Games would be regularly held once every four years.
