Situated mid-way between the North Texas cities of Dallas and Fort Worth, the community of Arlington, founded in 1876, has long been known as the home of Six Flags Over Texas at Arlington. Adult hearts may skip a beat when children ask to visit the sprawling and exhausting amusement park that was, for many years, the largest tourist attraction in Arlington. Girls and boys alike have thrilled to the facility's many rides and entertainment venues for years now, but increasingly Six Flags has been augmented by more offerings in Arlington, adult themed as well as family oriented.
The Ballpark at Arlington, now Ameriquest Field, serves as home to the Texas Rangers baseball team once owned by President George W. Bush during his pre-political business career. As the community has evolved into a North Texas sports center, Arlington girls and boys have learned to love a day at the ballpark with Mom and Dad as much as an afternoon riding the roller coasters at Six Flags. For the discerning Arlington adult, however, Ameriquest Field offers some of the finest baseball play in the nation and routinely draws enthusiastic crowds.
In the coming years Ameriquest field will gain a new neighbor as the Dallas Cowboys football team franchise completes construction of its new 75,000 stadium in Arlington. The $650 million stadium will feature a retractable roof and is expected to further spur the economic growth of the community as well as further whet the appetites of North Texas sports fans.
Arlington boasts two institutions of higher learning, the University of Texas at Arlington and Arlington Baptist College. At UT-Arlington girls and boys can apply for membership in 275 student organizations including 28 fraternities and sororities. The UT-Arlington campus covers some 400 acres in central Arlington. Girls and boys attending the school may work toward degrees ranging from bachelor's level programs to doctoral work.
Arlington Baptist College is a four-year Bible college founded in 1972 having evolved from the earlier Fundamental Baptist Bible Institute and the Bible Baptist Seminary. At this faith-based school in Arlington, girls and boys receive an education intended to prepare them to lead Christian lives based on faith and moral principles.
Add to these local features the presence of Lake Arlington, developed in 1957, and the city has something for everyone. With easy access to its larger neighbors, Dallas and Fort Worth, Arlington truly does occupy a Metroplex middle ground, giving its citizens some of the flavor of a smaller community with all the advantages of a modern, upscale, urban environment.
Arlington's sports and amusement venues continue to expand and the city's economy enjoys the resulting benefits. Although many of its citizens commute to either Dallas or Fort Worth, Arlington itself increasingly offers both entertainment and career opportunities to its citizens. In Arlington, adult and juvenile tastes are easily satisfied by the city's attractive blend of slower living and brighter lights at the ball park or the amusement park.
