Diet helps are part and parcel of the diet industry. As a matter of fact, no more so than today is there a wide variety of products on the market; each of them promises the moon, sun and stars - or at least rapid weight loss, sometimes even while you sleep! It is not surprising that many Americans spend hard-earned cash on these little pills - after all, would it not be wonderful to loose some weight while snoozing? Yet are natural diet pills safe?
It is important for consumers to understand that simply because a product is termed “natural” - diet pills often are – it does not mean it is without risk to you. Similarly, a smart consumer will learn to read the labels that state the ingredients, even if the manufacturer’s name is well known. For example, the ingredients most often found in natural diet pills are caffeine and ephedra. The latter is usually derived from the ma huang plant but it might also have been added from different herbal combinations. Both of these ingredients are considered stimulants, and as such are designed to directly affect your metabolism to speed it up. If you have a heart condition, this swift kick to your metabolism may increase your risk of a heart attack.
Yet there is a much more insidious risk to taking natural diet pills – for many Americans the idea of loosing weight with the help of a pill is spectacularly appealing. After all, everyone can pop a little pill, right? The danger that Americans do not see is the fact that while these natural supplements may indeed help you, they will not be a cure all. In other words, there is no pill in this world that will be able to undo years or decades of overeating without also changing your lifestyle. You may loose a pound here of there, but if you do not change your unhealthy lifestyle, the odds are pretty good that you will either gain it right back when you stop taking the supplements, or that you will not realize any health benefits that could come from losing a little weight.
To this end, it is important to combine your weight management program with healthier eating habits, a moderate exercise program, and also a doctor’s visit. The latter is absolutely critical to ensure that you are taking the weight off gradually, and that your body is adjusting well. In addition to the foregoing, it will not hurt to have your physician look over the list of ingredients and give her or his opinion on what it is that you are taking. While your doctor may not endorse the product, you will at least become informed if there are any potential side effects or even interactions that could occur with medications that you are already taking.
Sadly, there is no way of saying specifically that any one supplement is safe or not. Conversely, there is no direct way of saying that it will work for you, either. There is, however, the good old adage that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. This holds true for natural diet pills and everything else related to weight loss.
