In the 2000 Census, there was an estimated 2.5 million households where grandparents were raising grandchildren. Of course, this does not begin to count those who are raising their nieces, nephews, and even cousins. Some are even raising their nieces and nephew&'s children. Fifty-seven percent of grandparents raising grandchildren are still in the work force and seventeen percent are living in poverty.
Statistically speaking, in the year 1997, the number was reported as 5,436,000, or 7.7 percent of all children in the United States. The majority of children are being raised by grandparents, or just a grandmother alone, with different degrees of parent involvement. Since then the number has increased abundantly.

When thinking about it throughout history, grandparents have raised the young while parents supplied the basic needs for survival. Almost as if they were a team supporting and nurturing the young. Though throughout the years that team has broken apart and that has left, through the last few decades, many children being raised by their grandparents either solely or part-time and it has been on the increase. It’s so common these days that no grandparent can rid the thought that he or she may be one day raising their very own grandchildren at some point in their lives.
