Are A Few Things You Need To Know About Providing Your Child's Education At Home

If you are considering education at home for your child, you may be asking yourself a lot of questions. Your first question should be, "What do I have to do?" With the enforcement of truancy laws in many states you need to know the correct channels to take in order to begin home schooling your child. How will your child receive their high school diploma at home? These are important things to think about before you begin home schooling.
The answers to these questions vary from state to state. First, you must properly withdrawal your child from school. This is necessary in order to prevent prosecution for violating the truancy laws in your state. Many states have laws pertaining to truancy. This means that if your child is absent from school too often you can be taken to court. Every state has some sort of mandatory attendance law, stating that every child within a certain age range must spend a certain amount of time being educated. This does not mean that your child must attend a public school in order to meet these requirements. By providing education at home or through a private school you can avoid prosecution in a court of law.

In some states, in order to provide your child’s education at home, you must consider your home a private school. Depending on which state you live in, you may have to provide a tutor with teaching credentials to come to your home to work with your child. Other states require turning in yearly lesson plans and having them approved by a state official. Some states only require that certain subjects be covered at home. Not all states are the same and most private schools, including education at home, are not regulated in the same manner as public schools. However, in some states in order to provide education at home you must belong to a home schooling association.

Some states require that you use certain educational materials to meet curriculum standards. Again, this varies from state to state as well. If you are just wanting your child to receive their education at home but do not feel qualified to do so on your own, you may choose to enroll your child in an online school or “virtual school”. By doing this, you will allow your child to learn at a pace that is appropriate for them, and still receive their high school diploma at home. There is at least one company offering a home school curriculum. This company has also formed "virtual schools" designed to meet several states' charter school laws; in these “virtual schools”, students are required to use the curriculum provided by that company and they provide this material to you for free.

Private schools, including home schools, in some states, do not have to meet the same requirements for graduation as public schools. In these states it is up to the private or home school whether the child has met the requirements needed in order to graduate. However, other states do not accept these policies. This means that your child may not be considered a high school graduate in some states, if they receive their education at home. In these cases it is necessary to either have your child take online course to receive a high school diploma at home or they must take a GED test in order to show that they have met the necessary requirements to be considered a high school graduate. In most states, your child must show they have met these requirements in order to attend college. In order to enter into any branch of the armed services your child must also show they have met these requirements with either a high school diploma or GED.

At no time in history has home schooling been illegal. However, there have been many regulations implemented to control how home schooling is carried out. It is your responsibility to find out what laws are in place in your state, in order to provide an education in your home. One step is to make sure you follow the guidelines provided by your state in order to withdrawal your child from school in the proper fashion. Before you begin your child’s education at home make sure you have researched your states requirements and that you are prepared to meet them.
