Are Abortion Clinics Helping Women Or Simply Murdering Children?

Added: 09/11/2006

There is no topic more divisive in today's society than that of abortion clinics, abortion in general, and the law that made it all possible, "Roe v. Wade". The "War on Terror" might be controversial, and quite possibly gay marriage issues will get some tempers flaring, but to watch out and out hostilities, you will need to look no further than the topic of abortion.

For a Christian, this topic can become a bit dicey, especially if she or he does not know what the biblical position on abortion truly is. Similarly, if a Christian’s convictions on abortion are wishy-washy, then where is the hope for the rest of mankind – after all, Christians are called to be salt of the earth, in that they are to be the examples of what is right and wrong.

When talking to people who believe that abortion clinics are performing a much needed service to society, it almost always comes up that pro-life advocates would prefer that women die in back alleys at the hands of hacks that use coat hangers to perform an unsanitary abortion procedure. Since this is a purely emotional statement that has no basis in fact and refuses to look at the underlying issues that truly affect those who believe that abortion is murder, it can be classified as a verbal “grenade” and thus put aside as the empty rhetoric it is.

For those who are interested in pursuing the idea of why abortion clinics might not be places that uphold human dignity but instead destroy it, consider the three questions that are inevitably asked:
1.Is an unborn child a human being?
2.When does life begin?
3.Is abortion murder?

When you speak to someone who routinely performs the abortion procedure, either as a physician at one of the many abortion clinics or in private practice, you will notice that an unborn child is not usually referred to as a baby. Instead it might be considered a “fetus,” “mass of cells,” or “the growth.” It almost appears that all costs the term “baby” is avoided. For a Christian it is important to understand that no matter what you call that child in utero, it is indeed a child.

Thus, a Christian needs to remember that while the politically correct terminology may be anything short of actually calling the child a grapefruit, the biblically correct term is “child” or “baby.” Scriptures that back this up may be found in Genesis 25:21-22, Psalm 119:73 and so on.

If you concede as a Christian that an unborn child is indeed a child, you will also need to concede that it is indeed a human being. The question then when life begins, which is often glossed over in the materials by abortion clinics, also becomes glaringly obvious: life begins at conception. After all, one of the aspects of life is the ability to grow, and an unborn child is most certainly doing that!

At abortion clinics the sad reality is the fact that it has become acceptable to kill these children on demand. According to the Bible, this wholesale slaughter of children is akin to murder. The Bible is very straight forward when it prohibits the killing of someone who is found innocent of any crime, as is laid out in Deuteronomy 19:10. If you, as a Christian, find yourself struggling in this area – perhaps because of a lack of personal convictions - and dread the time that someone calls you a pro-lifer and means it as a slur, just remind them that you are more pro-choice than they are; after all, you are in favor of all this little unborn boys and girls to have a choice to be born!
