Amniomancy is the practice of using the placental membrane which is also called a veil over the face at birth.
When babies are born with a veil, it means extremely good luck for the family and child. This baby would be safe from witches and would not be able to be drowned. The babies were sold for large quantities of money because the babies were so special.
This veil also called a caul, is the shiny coat around the head and face of a newborn child. It covers the face and can't be wiped off. It must be gently and delicately peeled off. It is usually a piece from the amniotic sac that is covering the head. These cauls were sometimes pressed into books and flattened and kept as heirlooms for the family to pass down. It was said if the family did this, then generation after generation would always be lucky.
There is one bad legend associated with this practice. It was said in ancient times that the baby born with a veil would grow up to become a vampire. The caul had to be gotten rid of and destroyed in the proper ways or it would mean harm for those around the baby.
