Alveromancy is the practice of using sounds for divination.

Alveromancy is the practice of using sounds for divination. There were so many uses to this practice that readers never ran out of new ideas. You can listen to the waves crashing on the beach or the sound that a seashell makes when you place it to your ear. You can listen to the birds whistling or singing. You can listen for the sound of the wind and the rustle of the leaves.

Many believed that spirits lived on these many forces and could communicate with you if you listened close enough. You could ask a question and then you would listen to receive an answer. This was a hard practice to learn how to do unless you had a good ear and could make out sounds you could barely hear sometimes. Other times, it was no problem with the birds singing for example. You had to pick and choose the method that would work for you.

Many of the people who wanted to be read had their own ideas about this practice, and so brought their own objects for you to listen to and read. This is how some of the frauds were picked out. They pretended to hear something out of nothing. This is how they were caught.

The select few could hear something and passed on whatever they received. These readers were given a gift no one could imagine. Just think to have the ability to hear something inside of something. Wouldn't that be an awesome gift? That is just to be able to sit back and listen.
