The Lion King is a story about a lion cub named Simba who is next in line to the throne as soon as he is born which does not sit well at all with his evil uncle Scar. Scar got his name because of the huge scar on his face which was put in the same exact place on Scar’s face that the scar on Tony Montana’s face in Scarface was placed. To get the throne Scar needed his new nephew out of the way so Scar set it up where he would kill Simba’s father Mufasa, the king, and make Simba think that he killed his own father causing the cub to run in fear. Scar’s plan was successful and Simba fled into the jungle after fearing that he killed his own father. He met some interesting creatures in his travels and then he came across his two best friends a meerkat named Timon and a warthog named Pumbaa. Simba, Timon, and Pumbaa stay together all through Simba’s youth and at some point Simba is convinced that he must go back to his home and claim his kingdom.
The Lion King is loosely based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet and draws inspiration, as many Disney movies do, from various sources unknown to most people. The Elton John song Can You Feel The Love Tonight and the musical score for the movie by Hans Zimmer both won Oscars. The Elton John songs Hakuna Matata and Circle Of Life were nominated for Oscars but did not win. But The Lion King left its mark as one of the truly great Disney animated movies of all time and it will be remembered not only for its magical music, its moving story, and it colorful representation of the African jungles, but it will also go down as the first animated movie in Disney history where one of the characters has audible gas and that is just wonderful. Now we can all laugh along with Disney as Disney finally found a way to laugh at itself. Plus it took years to get those songs from The Lion King out of our heads just in time for the next Disney animated extravaganza.
