Airsoft is a tactical combat simulation game that can look about as real as combat can look without any actual bullets flying. There is a great deal of strategy that goes into air soft and a lot of research and military knowledge is necessary in order to participate. Airsoft and it's gameplay is about as close to being a real military situation as you will ever get into without actually fearing for your life.
In Airsoft you use pellet guns to eliminate your opponent and determining who has been eliminated is based completely on an honors system. But the true reason for the game of Airsoft has very little to do with eliminating your opponent and more to do with learning how to execute military and police strategy and in that way Airsoft is more of a tactical training game than it is a game of elimination. Airsoft differs from Paintball on so many levels that the two are hardly similar at all. Even though strategy is involved in Paintball that strategy is typically designed for the game of Paintball itself and has no real roots in any military or police training. In paintball you use small balls of paint to mark the opponents you eliminate and the objective of Paintball is the elimination of your entire opponent’s team or to capture your opponent’s flag. In Airsoft there can be similar games of capture the flag but the tactics used are much different that Paintball and, as was mentioned before, elimination of an opponent is more based on an honor system than anything else. Airsoft participants study military strategy and then train to implement that strategy in an Airsoft competition. It is as close to military training as a civilian will get and it is a very authentic experience. For the police tactics Airsoft competitors will study police tactics for situations such as gun fights or hostage takings and they will learn to execute those tactics in a game condition.
For the Airsoft player military training remains the primary goal. Some of the Airsoft games can be complete combat simulations including a medical staging area if someone should get hurt, simulated military rations and ammunition, and even military armored vehicles for some of the more intense Airsoft experiences. Because Airsoft was invented in Japan at a time when weapons were not available it can be said that Airsoft represents the need in many people to be involved in a dangerous military situation regardless of the potential for harm. Many of these Airsoft games can last for days and become quite realistic. It is a realism that has its roots in the inherent nature of every person to survive but it also plays on the glamorized view that some people have of the military. But it is much safer for someone with a glorified view of battle to get involved in Airsoft than any of the alternatives which could include the potential harm to innocent people.
