The hawaiin party speaks loudly of fun, excitement, tradition and culture. Very similar to a Luau party, the hawaiian party ideally should take place on the beach at sunset, with waves lapping in the back round. I can practically hear the cameras clicking away already! All your guests should be given multi-colored lei's -- the traditional Hawaiian party garland made of flowers - the minute they arrive. The lei are meant to symbolize love and respect. And typically your guest should wear lei's comprised of anywhere between 50 and 60 flowers. There are about 13 different lei's available. And each one has a different meaning. Every time I think about the Hawaiian lei I automatically think of the old TV series "Fantasy Island." I'm sure that long-defunct network gem gave many a hawaiian party a real boost.
But I digress. Shortly after receiving their lei's, you should stick a tall drink in the hands of your guests. Preferably fruit juice and rum. We don't want to glorify the use of alcohol, but you'll have a lot more luck getting people to hula dance if they're a lot less sober. Thus making your hawaiian party a lot more fun! Don't say you haven't been warned.
And to make your hawaiian luau party extra special, a few songs by Hawaiian crooner Don Ho will be in order, and barring that - you can always substitute with the Beach Boys. After all, you're supposed to be acting like you're in Hawaii. Maybe I'm jaded, but the only thing missing from this scenario is a small midget standing on a rock yelling "Da plane...! Da plane..!"
Another memorable event at your hawaiin luau party is ticki torch twirling. I wouldn't ask for volunteers from the audience for this one, but if you can afford to hire a professional, man will you be the talk of the office the next day!
Speaking of being a hit, an authentic touch at your Hawaiian luau party will be the addition of the traditional hawaiian luau party pig! The pig is roasted in a pit dug deep in the ground. The pit -- called an imu in Hawaiian -- is usually dug about four feet deep with hot coals laid on the bottom. The pig is rested on top of the coals and then both pig and coals are buried. The heat is contained in the pit and the pig is left to broil for the next 8 hours or so. Remember, you're eating pork, so no mistakes when you're preparing this roast!
Your hawaiian luau party demands that everyone is dressed for the part. So you'll probably want mandatory dress for the guests to be flowery shirts, straw hats, shorts and sandals. So now you have a handle on the food, the music and the dress. As far as ambience is concerned, remember these two items: ticki torches and palm trees! You can usually purchase ticki torches in sets of three or four. They burn on oil and stay lit for hours. If you can't afford real palm trees, then go with the little ones that can be placed on the dashboard of your car! A terrific conversation piece!
Like we mentioned earlier, ideally your hawaiian luau party should be at the beach or at least a swimming pool. If that doesn't work, I say dim the lights in the living room, move the furniture out of the way and get ready to party! Aloha everybody!
