Agalmatomancy

Added: 01/10/2008

Agalmomancy is derived from the Greek word agalma and manteia, these two meaning figure and divination respectively.

Derived from the Greek word agalma and manteia, these two meaning figure and divination respectively. You have an idea of what Agalmatomancy is. It is a practice using statues for divination. This practice is also closely related to Idolomancy. It is also said that some people could interpret the features of statues that would give them some link to the future. Others read the many symbols that were used for decoration to give them a glimpse of upcoming events.

Back in ancient times when the high priests wanted to look into the future or know something before anyone else, they would bring huge statues to life and tell them of future events. May people believe that the statues had been taken over by evil spirits. These spirits would them lie to the priests and make them look foolish in front of their congregations.

Back in old England, gargoyles were said to have the power to predict future happenings. There was an old folktale of a priest who brought these creatures to life and they flew through the city at night so that no one could see them. Many people didn't believe in the priest's tales and they fired him from the church. They found out later that many of his predictions that he had gotten from the gargoyles later came true. Coincidences?
