A Fun Filled Trip to Redwood National Park

Added: 07/22/2006

If you have children, a trip to Redwood National Park is a must. Sure, you can see pictures of redwood trees online or in picture books, but nothing will do justice to an authentic redwood other than standing at the foot of such a tree. Did you know that these majestic trees can reach heights of up to 367 feet and a diameter of over 23 feet? Nothing compares to the touch and feel of such a tree, and this experience can be yours with a trip to the national park!

Redwood National Park is a combination of the national park that bears this name, but also three state parks, namely Jedediah Smith Redwoods-, Del Norte Coast-, and Prairie Creek State Parks. This move was done in a last ditch effort to preserve the majestic redwood tree which had lost significant numbers to loggers. It is estimated that only about ten percent of redwood forest are preserved today.

A trip to Redwood National Park is likely to be a down to earth, rustic experience. Since the number one goal of the park is the preservation of the endangered redwood trees, amenities for travelers have been installed as afterthoughts. Thus, it is no surprise that the only place to stay locally is the DeMartin Redwood Youth Hostel. Private rooms may be had at $49 per night, while children may enjoy staying in bunk beds in the main rooms for only $10 a night.

If you prefer to go ahead and rough it a bit, camping is available inside Redwood National Park. If you are planning on driving in, you will need to use the state parks and their campgrounds, since they are the only ones that are accessible for anything that has wheels. At Redwood Park, cabins are considered the lap of luxury, and are not available on a consistent basis. As a matter of fact, since there is talk of some needed overhaul of the facilities, not only are Redwood Park cabins quite possibly closed, but the 251 campsites that are part of the state park portions of the park may be snatched up rather quickly as well. It is probably a good idea to call the park service ahead of time to reserve your own campsite.

If you consider front country camping to be something for toddlers, and you and your family are ready to a real life, honest to goodness backcountry camping trip, then Redwood National Park is the place to be! The only way to reach the backcountry camping spots is by rigorous hiking in and out of the location, and you will need a permit to do so. Please keep in mind that since the redwoods are considered to be endangered, the rules are strictly enforced!

You will be required to limit your stay to five consecutive nights and you will only be granted permits to three such five-day outings per year. Since Redwood National Park is a natural habitat to bears, you will need to make sure that food and trash are adequately stored to prevent prowling bears from becoming a nuisance or even danger.

Another set of activities that are allowed in the park are mountain-biking and horseback riding. There are specific trails that cater to riders, and it is important not to leave the trails and go exploring on one's own. Kayaking and canoeing are also encouraged, usually along the Smith River, where fishing is permitted with a license.

Of course, if you are just passing by for a day of fun, and you want to take it easy and just touch a redwood tree, you too will enjoy the boundless wonders of the park. Go to the visitor center and perhaps participate in a nature walk which will give you a bit of background on these marvelous trees and their habitats - and don't forget to take a lot of pictures!
