Sports are a huge part of our culture and society. Most people who like sports are very familiar with baseball, football, golf, basketball, horse racing, tennis, bowling, and ice skating. In addition, many people who don’t like sports even know some well known professional athletes such as Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Tony Gywnn., and Kobe Bryant. However, many sport lovers and non sports lovers alike may not be very familiar with the sport of boxing. Most people believe the sport of boxing is extremely violent. Therefore, many sports lovers and non sports lovers don’t like boxing because of its violent nature. In fact, many parents don’t allow their children to watch boxing on television or play boxing video games because the parents feel that boxing is too violent for their children to watch. Parents might also believe that their children will copy the punching movements that a boxer creates in the boxing ring; thereby hurting other children while playing. Therefore, watching boxing or playing boxing is out of the question. Boxing is a sport that requires boxes to have both a physical and mental toughness in order to succeed in the wonderful world of boxing. Therefore, one thing about boxing is certain; a successful boxer is tough. Now, let’s look deeper into the wonderful world of boxing.

Boxing is also called pugilism. Boxing is a sport that specializes in glove to glove combat. It is a sport that has its beginnings in England. Two boxers of similar weight fight each other using their fists in a series of one to three minute intervals that are labeled rounds. A boxer achieves victory if the opponent is knocked down and can’t get up off the mat before the referee counts to ten. The referee in a boxing match counts to ten very slowly. A boxer can win the match by getting a knockout or a technical knockout. A technical knockout occurs when an injured boxer is deemed unable to continue by the referee. If the fight is not stopped before an agreed upon number of rounds then, the winner is determined by the judges’ scorecard or by the referee decision. Did you know that in some countries that have other fighting sports such as dog fighting and cock fighting, boxing is labeled English boxing as opposed to say, French boxing?

The Greeks and later on, the Romans had a sport called pugilism which is now a term that is synonymous with boxing. In ancient Rome there were two kinds of boxing. The first form of boxing was athletic and was adapted from the Greeks and stayed popular throughout the Roman world. The other kind of Roman boxing was gladiatorial. In other words, Russell Crowe would have loved this type of boxing. Anyway, these types of boxer were usually criminals and slaves who hoped to become champions in order to obtain his freedom. However, free men also took part in the gladiatorial form of boxing.

There are a few well known boxers today such as Mohamed Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Oscar De Hoya. In addition, the boxer was exceptionally illustrated in the Oscar winning movie Rocky starring Sylvester Stallone. All of these real and fictional boxers show that a boxer is mentally and physically tough.
